Structured Independence in B&R Style
None of our scheduled dates fit your schedule? Like the idea of taking the reins yourself? Love your independence but don’t want to be totally on your own? A B&R self-guided biking trip is just the ticket. It combines three hallmarks of any B&R itinerary—excellent hotels, beautiful riding routes and superb custom-fitted bicycles—with the freedom of pacing each day exactly the way you like. We arrange some can’t-miss meals and events, transfer your bags and equip you with all the information you’ll need to craft the trip you desire. A Century Ride at dawn or a leisurely afternoon loop; a picnic of panini terracina or a gourmet lunch; a walking tour of historic Siena or a dip in the pool; the choices are yours.
Day 1 Pedal a warm-up loop through the farmland of the Val di Chiana, reward yourself for the final climb with a swim before dinner at the intimate 11-room Villa Cicolina
Day 2 In the heart of the stunning crete hills, visit tiny, perfect Renaissance town Pienza for browsing and lunch before looping back via Montepulciano’s vino nóbile vineyards
Day 3 Roll up and down through picturesque villages such as Montisi en route to Locanda dell’Amorosa, with an al fresco dinner tonight at its sublime restaurant
Day 4 Loop through Monte San Savino and (on the long option) Cortona, with its irresistible galleries and trattorias, return in time for a dip in the shade of secular cypress trees
Day 5 Ride the iconic SP438 road to Siena, with an optional detour to the historic monastery at Monte Oliveto Maggiore; after a guided walking tour of the renowned Piazza del Campo, dine in any of the city’s wonderful establishments
Day 6 Depart Siena at your leisure—there are several daily trains to Rome and Florence—or better yet stay on an extra night in this quintessential Tuscan city

Villa Cicolina, Montepulciano
Once the home of a noble family, the Villa Cicolina embodies Tuscany with its rustic charms and fresh décor. Lounge by the infinity pool in the midst of the olive grove embracing the exquisite views, or wander through the adjacent vineyards. With just 11 rooms, this heavenly villa is ours to enjoy, and Stefania is attentive to all of our whims.

Locanda dell’Amorosa, Sinalunga
For Carlo Citterio, the Locanda dell’Amorosa is a work in progress and a labour of love. When he set out to restore the property that has been in his family for centuries, his first step was to convert the stables into a superb restaurant. Soon other buildings were refurbished: your bedroom may well have been a clock tower or the hunting lodge. Literally translated as “lodging of romance,” the Locanda exudes just that, and has long been a favourite B&R retreat. We are extremely proud to be the only active company to stay here.

Grand Hotel Continental, Siena
Located in the heart of Siena, the five-star Grand Hotel Continental is a recently converted 17thC palazzo, originally designed by the baroque architect Giovanni Fontana. Ponder the history of this majestic, beautifully frescoed building as you sip prosecco in the courtyard.

Moderate to Challenging
This trip is rated Moderate to Challenging. You will cover hilly terrain, but we’ve kept the
average daily distance to a moderate 40 km (25 miles). As much as possible, our recommended
routes avoid the steepest climbs, but please be aware that Tuscany is hilly.
