Here, Experience Designer <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/who-we-are/meet-the-designers/christine-tucker" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(70, 120, 134);">Christine Tucker</a> shares the story of a family adventure full of incredible hikes, wildlife sightings and cultural connection in <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/africa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(70, 120, 134);">Southern Africa</a>.&nbsp;Though this trip was bookended by time in South Africa’s most notable cities, stunning Cape Town and inspiring Johannesburg, the exploration and adventure took on a whole different look and feel once this family stepped out onto less developed terrain.&nbsp;&nbsp;The intent, says Experience Designer Christine Tucker, who specializes in B&amp;R trips in Eastern and Southern Africa, was to immerse the entire family in places, flavours, smells and sounds they hadn’t experienced before. “It was a trip for the senses,” says Christine. “And an itinerary totally unique to them.”&nbsp;

After a few days discovering Cape Town, from a hike up Lion’s Head, one of the city’s most famous mountains, to a beach that a small colony of penguins calls home, the family headed north to Zimbabwe for some time in Southern Hwange National Park. The largest natural reserve in the country, this was a prime spot for safari and wildlife viewing—over 100 mammal species and 400 different types of birds call it home. After incredible game drives, the family spent relaxing evenings recalling animal sightings around the fire at a luxury bush camp. “The family experienced everything I had hoped for and then some. Nature put on a show for them that they will never forget,” says Christine.&nbsp;Their next stop was an eco-lodge at Victoria Falls in Zambia, right on the banks of the Zambezi River. Along with stunning sunrise and sunset cruising along the river, they had visits to a sustainable community farm and a local village to gain a deeper understanding of daily life in the area. They travelled to South Luangwe National Park to track animals on foot—a highlight of travel in Zambia.&nbsp;&nbsp;“There is nothing like a walking safari,” says Christine. “Having a true connection to the land, feeling that energy rise up through your feet to the back of your neck knowing predators, or worse cranky buffalo are wandering nearby. The world just slows down and simplicity takes over.”&nbsp;Another highlight—one of many during the three-week Bespoke trip—was an epic hike. The family walked to their next camp in South Luangwe following a 12-kilometre route, an incredible experience with a private guide that helped them truly understand the essence of this spectacular part of the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;“But let’s just say we can only set the stage and then Africa provides the magic,” explains Christine. "It’s never the same twice.&nbsp;What is meant to happen will happen and the best experiences are those you never would have imagined or planned for.”&nbsp;

Lifetime memories made on a family adventure in Southern Africa

“These countries have become only known for safari and their wildlife, but there's so much depth happening in these places. “I always like to send people to the Ngorongoro crater but not have them go down into it,” she says of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera in <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/trip/bespoke/tanzania-bespoke" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(5, 99, 193);">northern Tanzania</a>. “You will do a walk in the area so that you're running into Masai in the morning as they're bringing their cows to graze.” It’s these moments that make planning for experiences outside of a game drive so important. “You're having these serendipitous meetings by just getting out of the car,” she explains.&nbsp;What really sets experiences in African countries apart is that human connection. In Rwanda, for instance, Christine loves to design walking trips. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to experience the lush landscape of glistening green mountain ranges, stop for a tasting at coffee plantations and breathe in the serenity of cloud forests. Walking also presents an immediate link to the locals.

Why you need to discover Africa beyond safari

Recognizing the impact the pandemic has had on conservation funding across Africa, which has historically relied heavily on tourism, B&amp;R has partnered with African Parks, pledging US$50,000 per year to specific parks across Africa for the following three years, commencing 2022.

<a href="https://www.africanparks.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(112, 178, 196);">African Parks</a>&nbsp;is a non-profit conservation organization that takes on direct responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. African Parks was founded in 2000 in response to the crisis facing Africa's protected areas. Their vision is to effectively manage Africa's protected areas and national parks on behalf of governments to benefit wildlife and local communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their business model created a new paradigm for conservation, playing a major role across the continent in helping African governments turn their failing parks into ecological, socio-political, and economic strongholds for their countries. It's a solution to one of Africa's most pressing challenges. In 20 years, they've built the largest and most ecologically diverse portfolio of parks of any one organization in Africa. With 19 parks in 11 countries spanning more than 36 million acres, their footprint is the equivalent of half of the land in the US National Parks system.&nbsp;&nbsp;Akagera National ParkOur nominated park for 2022 is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.africanparks.org/the-parks/akagera" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(112, 178, 196);">Akagera National Park</a>, Rwanda. Akagera is Central Africa's largest protected wetland and Rwanda's last remaining savannah ecosystem. It is, therefore, the only protected area in Rwanda suitable and prepared to sustain black rhino and lion populations. 20 years ago, it was on the verge of being lost forever. Following the 1994 genocide, Akagera was a depleted landscape overrun by more than 30,000 cattle. In 2010, African Parks assumed management of Akagera in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, shifting the park's trajectory. In just five years, poaching was mostly eliminated, and over two decades experienced a dramatic transformation and remarkable revival. Wildlife populations have increased by 48% since 2010, among them 43 lions and 28 black rhinos.&nbsp;&nbsp;The park also offers a secure and healthy ecosystem that can one day be a stronghold for black rhinos and contribute to the conservation of the species on a regional level as a source of individuals and genetics for rewilding and reinforcing populations in other areas. Before the pandemic, when the park took a hard hit on its tourism revenues, Akagera was well on its way to becoming African Parks' first financially self-sustainable park. The park remains an inspiring conservation story that will enthral us for years to come with every re-introduction.&nbsp;&nbsp;Akagera National Park is often included as an extension when planning a&nbsp;<a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/bespoke/rwanda-bespoke" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(112, 178, 196);">Rwanda Bespoke</a>&nbsp;trip. The Slow Fund: Conserving Africa's Iconic Species & Landscapes With African Parks

Here, Experience Designer <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/who-we-are/meet-the-designers/nathan-lane" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(70, 120, 134);">Nathan Lane</a> shares the story of a cross-border adventure in <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/asia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(70, 120, 134);">Southeast Asia</a>.&nbsp;Sometimes travellers have a specific destination in mind. At other times they have a very confined period in which they can travel and are open to how—and where—that time is spent. This group of friends had a specific three weeks for their trip and were intrigued about Vietnam. Then they spoke with Nathan Lane, B&amp;R’s Experience Designer for Southeast Asia.&nbsp;&nbsp;“They were travelling in fall, a time of year that is rainy in Central Vietnam, where we usually do our cycling, so we expanded their exploration to include time in neighbouring Cambodia and Laos,” Nathan says.&nbsp;While these countries are geographically close, their incredible diversity of culture and history made for an immensely rewarding experience. Adding to the unique nature of this trip were the guides. The group had local guides in each country they visited, top-tier guides who’d been leading groups for decades and offered deep insight into the customs and history of the places they were visiting. To ensure the entire journey, including border crossings, was smooth, their trip leader was on the road with them from start to finish. “It was essential to make sure everything on the trip was seamless,” Nathan explains.&nbsp;

In Vietnam, they embraced the atmosphere of Hanoi with a cyclo tour through the Old Quarter, then balanced that by exploring the wilderness of Northern Vietnam where they walked through a valley of sweeping rice terraces, meeting with locals in the area’s rural villages.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their next stop was Laos, a country that typically isn’t on travellers’ radars. Home to dozens of different ethnic groups, each with their own languages and cultures, it’s a place that keeps visitors guessing. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the fusion of traditional Lao structures and colonial architecture.&nbsp;&nbsp;“It ticks all the boxes of the romance of travel in Asia,” says Nathan. "Every single morning at sunrise there's a couple hundred apprentice monks in orange, from like seven to 70 years old, walking around the town collecting alms. There is good bike riding on traffic-free roads, and boat trips that cruise down the Mekong River.” The group experienced all of this with time for meandering through the city’s neighbourhoods as well.&nbsp;And in Cambodia they travelled to towering ancient temples by bicycle and learned about the spiritual history of the country. A highlight of the group’s time here was a takeover of Maison Polanka, a luxe boutique hotel surrounded by lush jungle foliage. The intimate three-villa hotel is inspired by traditional Khmer villages, each structure built on stilts and design inspired by Asian and Cambodian craft. “It’s the coolest hotel experience you can have,” says Nathan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Having a property all to themselves, not common in Asia, meant the group got to indulge in private experiences like a candlelit dinner around the pool, adding to the magic of the entire trip.

Three countries in three weeks—Southeast Asia makes it easy

From ancient forts and glittering temples to jungles humming with fascinating wildlife, nowhere in the world contains as much diversity as Southeast Asia. Cambodia &amp; Vietnam are the jewels in its crown, combining the crème de la crème of activities for all tastes and ages.&nbsp;There are endless temples and waterfalls to explore, mind-blowing cuisine to sample and bike trails through every landscape imaginable. Mountains, forests, vibrant cities, tranquil rice paddies, through world wonders like Angkor Wat and even high <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/take-a-ride-biking-the-hai-van-pass-in-vietnam" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">above the clouds</a>. For foodies, its bustling cities combine local cuisine with touches of French, Japanese and Chinese. For local experiences, the people are proud to share their culture and traditions through colourful festivals, handicrafts and ancient wellness rituals.

On my recent research trip to Cambodia &amp; Vietnam, I had the opportunity to reconnect with our incredible local team, exploring the region for the first time in two years due to restrictions. It’s clear that Southeast Asia underwent a <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/travel-journal/25-reasons-to-visit-the-new-vietnam" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">distinct shift</a> over the last few years, so a few thoughts raced through my mind during my flight: would I spend the first day scoping out new hotels or bike routes? Do I have enough time to visit the night market? Is my favourite spot for Cau Lau still open in Hoi An? (it was indeed, and I had two bowls of the local noodle for breakfast!).&nbsp;Upon landing in Vietnam, I met with our network of local guides and drivers that have been working with B&amp;R for the past 10-15 years. I embarked on a five-day trip with the team; we scoped out more new bike routes, ate great seafood, noodles and pizza, and visited some hotels new to our trips for 2023 and 2024.We had the opportunity to visit one of my favourite hotels on our Vietnam Biking Expedition, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. This beachside retreat is only accessible by water and was recently voted one of the best hotels in Asia by Conde Nast Traveller. There are endless private beaches and waterfalls to explore, and each villa is complete with its very own plunge pool. I’ve planned out an entire beach day dedicated to getting the best out of this unique stay, and I’m so excited to share it with my travellers.

We also had the chance to visit Zannier Bãi San Hô, another hotel highlight on trip. Stepping into this wellness haven, I was surrounded by incredible mountain vistas and a beautiful beachfront. The property is hidden among an untouched coastline and surrounded by a beautiful coral bay, the perfect retreat mid-trip to stretch your legs after all that biking.In Cambodia, everyone is thriving, happy and ready for travellers. The country interestingly seemed to have kept their heads down during the pandemic and focused on new biking infrastructure. I spoke with some drivers around Angkor Wat and discovered bike paths new to B&amp;R, which I’m so excited to share with my travellers on our <a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/cambodia-vietnam-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cambodia &amp; Vietnam Biking</a> trip.Below are the highlights from my research trip, from biking the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam to sampling organic delicacies over unforgettable views.

Notes from the Road: A Research Trip in Vietnam & Cambodia

Southeast Asia is filled with cinematic allure, drama and decadence, as well as a kaleidoscope of experiences. Choose from serene beaches framed by lush jungles, vibrant street markets bursting with exotic flavours, and ancient temples full of history. “Slow Down to See the World” is what George Butterfield suggested more than 50 years ago, when he was encouraging people to walk or bike when they travelled. It not only became the motto for Butterfield &amp; Robinson, it’s advice that seems timelier than ever now that most of us are moving all too quickly and often frantically through our daily lives.&nbsp;George may well have been reacting to the “If It’s Tuesday, This Must be Belgium” kind of tourism that was then in vogue, when travellers were more inclined to visit seven cities in as many days, packed into a trip that was like an overweight suitcase.&nbsp;

His genius was counterintuitive, suggesting that instead, the best way to experience Europe was to spend a week in Bordeaux or Tuscany, but not racing from church to museum to monument. The days would be measured by walking or biking and experiencing the outdoors of a country that was foreign to us. It turned out to be a menu for savouring each day, enjoying each meal, treasuring each sip of wine, in the company of young and smart guides and some like-minded travellers.&nbsp;Those were radical suggestions back then. While they’ve been copied by others over the ensuing years, they’ve rarely been bettered and they remain groundbreaking today.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is travel as a two-part formula. First, Slow Down. It sounds easy, but this may be the toughest suggestion of all. Most of us are not programmed to do that. Everywhere we turn, we’re encouraged to do things faster, quicker and then move on to the next thing. That’s the very antithesis of B&amp;R, which has always advocated two’s: two wheels or two feet. Neither is especially fast. You will, however, slow down as a result.The second part of that equation is See the World. You can’t help but see the world if you’re moving slowly, on two wheels or two feet. If we have learned anything these past two years, it’s the virtue of slowing down and smelling the roses. Life passes all too quickly, and too often in a blur. I also remember pausing while walking on a narrow vineyard road to watch the exceptionally slow march of a battalion of Burgundian snails. That was Burgundy for me, and frankly, you can’t get any slower than that.

Ah, the age-old question: how fit do I need to be to do a bike trip? One of our most commonly asked questions, our answer is: you don’t have to be an athlete in any way to complete a B&amp;R bike trip.We’ve been doing this for over 50 years, and we’re big on everyone marching to the beat of their own drum. We believe that you should go at whatever speed suits you: slow, fast or something in between. No matter what speed you plan to go, it’s a good idea to train prior to your trip to get the most out of it.Our best bit of advice is this: get out and ride! Spending some dedicated time on your bike before your trip will help avoid overly sore muscles, lessen fatigue and acclimatize to life on two wheels. Below we've shared some important tips to help you prepare for your next B&amp;R biking or e-biking trip:&nbsp;

As mentioned above, the best way to prepare for your trip is to simply get out on your bike! We recommend riding outdoors for a few hours per week for the month leading up to your trip, increasing the time spent riding the closer you get to your departure date, and adding in some cross-training activities such as strength training, yoga or Pilates.&nbsp;We highly recommend getting outside on your bike as often as possible—spin classes are great for cardio, but don’t give you much practice for handling and braking, which are important skills you’ll need to stay comfortable and safe on your B&amp;R trip. Don’t forget to keep hydrated throughout your activities, stretch afterwards, and leave ample time to recover.&nbsp;&nbsp;Above all, make sure you enjoy the ride!

This means it may take some time to get used to the feel of the extra weight as you begin to ride.If you've never used an e-bike, but have booked a B&amp;R e-biking trip, we recommend renting one before your B&amp;R trip to get a sense of the speed, weight and feel.

E-Bike Safety

E-bikes are designed to be easy to use and, as long as you can ride a standard bike, it takes only a couple of minutes to get accustomed to the e-system.To use an e-bike, simply turn it on using the power button, select your desired power mode on the display computer, and you’re ready to ride!&nbsp;The gears, brakes and pedals work exactly the same as a standard bike, but be aware of the added torque an e-bike provides when you first start moving.If you need to increase or decrease the power mode on the e-bike, including turning the bike off, you can toggle the buttons on the display computer without having to stop riding.

Almost all e-bikes are designed with a set speed limit that caps the power output at a designated speed–in Europe, this is 25km/h. This limit is a safety feature, but it’s important to note that it does not prevent a rider from going faster, it simply dictates that anything past the 25km/h limit must be 100% powered by the rider. This limit is typically designated by local jurisdiction, so it may vary in different parts of the world.

An e-bike battery should last you all day on a B&amp;R trip! Most good quality pedelec e-bikes have ratings around 120km (or about 75 mi.) of riding per charge, providing you’re using the lowest power mode. There are many factors that can impact battery charge, including wind, road conditions and elevation, but most riders can get through the day without worrying about it. We’ll always have spare batteries on hand if yours runs low!

The type of e-bike you’ll receive on a B&amp;R trip will depend on the region you’re travelling in, as we select bike models to suit regional needs and local terrain. To be fair, companies will likely lose money doing this, and they hope to do it rarely, but as a result, guaranteed departures tend to be an extra offered by the more expensive, luxurious tour operators. But when hoteliers James and Hayley Baillie took over the reins and announced a $20 million revamp of this beloved lodge in the heart of Australia’s stunning Daintree Rainforest, I knew we were in for something special.&nbsp;This power-couple of Australian tourism has a seemingly innate ability to draw the most out of a region, crafting luxury lodges that combine a respectful sense of place, with understated luxury and innovative design. Silky Oaks is the latest gem in their curated collection of Australian lodges. With its open-air concept and unparalleled location between the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and the Mossman River, Silky Oaks is a tropical haven for travellers looking to slow down and truly feel one with mother earth.&nbsp;I sat down with Hayley Baillie, my friend and co-owner of&nbsp;Baillie Lodges, to find out how their touch has transformed this already-legendary rainforest sanctuary.

My husband James and I both had personal connections to the lodge from our time there in the 1990s: I was on holiday with my parents and James was formerly the Lodge General Manager when the property was owned by P&amp;O Resorts.&nbsp;&nbsp;When the chance arose to bring the property under Baillie Lodges, we saw an opportunity to offer guests a new experience of the world’s oldest rainforest through modern design, local artworks and food and beverages. It’s been our mission to partner with premium local tour operators, especially for First Nations Kuku Yalanji cultural tours.&nbsp;

The Daintree Rainforest and gently flowing Mossman River are the natural attractions that play centre stage. Our aim in commissioning a local, Cairns-based architect to revitalize the lodge was to preserve as much of the property’s heritage as possible, while also making the most of the landscape and enabling seamless interaction with the environment for our guests. This meant raising the roof to reach toward the rainforest treetops and adopting an open-air design to welcome the sights and sounds of the rainforest and river.&nbsp;

Yes, and this approach to working sustainably with the local community, its artists and producers is key to the way Baillie Lodges operates; and in turn, contributes to the guest experience and a real ‘sense of place.'We worked with the local First Nations Kuku Yalanji artists at the Yalanji Art Centre on commissions of ceramic tiles that represent the flora and fauna of the Daintree and align with the names of each suite. Guests see these tiles in the reception area on arrival and this installation sets the scene for an experience immersed in nature. The artworks by Australian artist Catherine Nelson seen around the lounging areas and in suites embrace the immersive and almost magnetic draw of the landscape which is so much a part of a stay at Silky Oaks Lodge.We also work with the region’s small-scale food and drink producers from the reef and the rainforest to the Atherton Tablelands food bowl to source local ingredients while supporting local farmers and producers.&nbsp;

It’s entirely possible for our guests to experience the Great Barrier Reef on half or full-day tours, plus take a First Nations Kuku Yalanji guided walk through the Daintree or Mossman Gorge and then float down the river on a magical tour with Back Country Bliss.&nbsp;&nbsp;My recommended must-do experience is both addictive and free: take the path to the Mossman River in front of the main lodge at Silky and dive in, head under! It’s refreshing, pure water—known as ‘healing waters’ by the region’s Indigenous community—and gives a wonderful welcome to the country. You can swim early in the morning, at lunch and before dinner. I recommend all three!

The Beach Billabong is a private swimming hole in the Mossman River, just up from the main lodge fringed with white sands just like a freshwater beach! If I’m feeling more adventurous and really want to go off-grid, I’ll hike to the Fig Tree Rapids where I can swim under a freshwater waterfall and have the waterhole all to myself!

On the lunch menu, my go-to is always the kingfish tataki which uses local ingredients from the new Kitchen Garden we’ve developed on-site.Sunset is a wonderful time to enjoy cocktails on the Jungle Perch overlooking the river.
